Dr. Thomas E. Weisskopf, Professor of Economics (Emeritus), University of Michigan, USA will deliver a lecture ‘Rethinking Affirmative Action in Admission to Higher Education’ on March 8, 2011 at 5:00 PM, at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. Dr. Thomas Weisskopf is a Professor both at the Economics Department and the Social Science Program of the Residential College, University of Michigan, USA.
This lecture forms the first of the series of public lectures jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode and the Centre for Research and Education for Social Transformation (CREST). This lecture series that aims to bring to the wider society the latest trends in research on issues concerning Indian and global social realities, will be inaugurated by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode.
Dr. Thomas E. Weisskopf, has extensively written on political economy in an internationally comparative context. Since 2000 he has been writing on issues relating to affirmative action in the comparative context of the United States and India, with particular attention to admissions to higher educational institutions.
His well known work ‘Affirmative Action in the United States and India: A Comparative Perspective’ (Routledge, London, 2004) analyzes the way in which differences in the social, cultural, economic, and political contexts of the USA and India affect the prospects for the success of positive discrimination policies in the two countries.
